It can be challenging to navigate the incredibly competitive compact car class to find a vehicle that offers everything you’re looking for. The segment is known for its fuel efficiency and approachable price range, but it takes more than the basics to stand out from the crowd. That’s why the Hyundai Elantra rises above the class standards with abundant cabin space and a long list of popular technology options for entertainment and safe travels.
Hyundai offers the Elantra in sedan and hatchback body styles, and both variations sport sleek styling with contemporary design and lasting comfort. The cabin remains tranquil even when the roadways turn rough, and its reserved fuel economy and high predicted reliability add considerable value on top of its modest price tag.

For 2020, Hyundai updated the Elantra’s powertrain, and the base 147-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine now comes standard with a continuously variable automatic transmission. If you opt for the Elantra GT hatchback, your 4-cylinder will generate 161 horsepower. The hatchback engine comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Hyundai also offers the Elantra Eco trim, which runs on a 128 horsepower 1.4-liter and pairs with a seven-speed automatic. This option is particularly fuel efficient for driving through town, while all 2020 models uphold the Elantra’s reputation for excellent gas mileage.
If you’re looking for a particularly athletic drive, consider the Sport trim or the hatchback N-Line, which run on a turbocharged 201-horsepower 4-cylinder. With any powertrain you choose, you’ll enjoy a smooth ride and balanced maneuvering around twists and turns. The Elantra’s suspension also dissipates any harsh bumps you might encounter on the road.
On the inside, the 2020 Elantra sports an attractive interior with quality materials throughout. Up to five people can ride with ample cushioning and support across both rows, and you’ll find plenty of legroom in any seat. When children ride along, you can fasten their car seats in the back row’s two sets of LATCH connections. The standard furnishings are plush and handsome, and you can customize the compact car with available amenities like heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and leather upholstery.
The Elantra’s storage capacity varies by body style, with 14.4 cubic feet available in the sedan’s trunk. If you choose the hatchback, you’ll find 24.9 cubic feet open behind the rear seats. When more space is needed, you can also fold the rear seats for 55 cubic feet.
The Elantra comes standard with a 5-inch display screen and physical controls that accommodate standard Bluetooth®* connectivity. You can also opt for available features like a navigation system, Clari-Fi music restoration, wireless device charging, and smartphone synchronization with Android and Apple devices. Several smart safety features come standard, including forward collision warning and a driver attention monitor. Available safety systems include pedestrian detection and blind spot warning.
Hyundai brought the Elantra to the U.S. in 1992, and American drivers responded with enthusiasm thanks to its humble starting price and disciplined gas mileage. Hyundai made the Elantra available as both a wagon and four-door sedan six years later, with a 120-horsepower engine generating plenty of energy for the daily drive. The Elantra underwent a full redesign in 2001, and Hyundai revamped the car with a fresh cabin design, a new powertrain, and more technology options. The manufacturer also took this opportunity to phase out the wagon body style in favor of a well-rounded hatchback.
In 2007, the Elantra entered its next generation, presenting an airy interior with more space and even more amenities and features. It also reassured drivers with new safety options. The car’s sixth generation began in 2017, introducing a new level of interior sophistication and comfort. Hyundai offered new safety tools like blind spot monitoring, and power came courtesy of upgraded engine options. Hyundai continues to develop and innovate new ways to enhance their compact car, and each new year model builds on their foundation of efficiency, safety, and quality.
